Escherichia coli is een geslacht uit de coli-achtigen en is een facultatief anaërobe, gramnegatieve, staafvormige bacterie van de Enterobacteriaceae. Zij zijn in tegenstelling tot de andere Entero's in staat om lactose te fermenteren onder gasvorming. De humaanpathogene E. coli worden onder andere op ziektebeeld ingedeeld in een aantal groepen. Dit zijn EnteroPathogene E. coli (EPEC), EnteroToxigene E. coli (ETEC), Entero Invasieve E. coli (EIEC), Entero Hemorragische E. coli (EHEC) en Entero Adherente-Aggreratieve E. coli (EA-AggEC).
