Het geslacht Staphylococcus, specifiek de soort aureus, (hierna S. aureus genoemd) behoort tot de familie van de Micrococcaceae. S. aureus is een facultatief anaërobe, Grampositieve en coagulase-positieve bacterie. Coagulase-positief zijn onder andere ook de soorten S. intermedius en enkele stammen van S. hyicus. Zij zijn in staat toxine te produceren, wat een voedselvergiftiging tot gevolg kan hebben. Bij ongeveer 50 % van de bevolking komt deze bacterie voor op de handen en in het neusslijmvlies.
